Podcast 2 - Domestic Abuse

April 2025

This is a subject which needs airing because according to Scottish Government statistics, the most common reason for children in Scotland to be placed on “at risk” registers is because of domestic violence. To help shine a light on this most challenging of child protection issues, podcast presenter Clare English was joined by three guests - Marsha Scott of Scottish Women's Aid, domestic abuse survivor Emily and Professor John Devaney of Edinburgh University.

PODCAST 3 - Lasting Effects of Childhood Abuse

April 2025

Many adult survivors of abuse have spoken about the lifelong impact of being abused in childhood - impacts which include trauma; mental, emotional and physical health problems; difficulties with trust and relationship building; become dependent on alcohol or drugs; behaving recklessly; or living in a state of hypervigilance. To give us an insight to how trauma of childhood abuse can manifest itself in later life, podcast presenter Clare English was joined by child sexual abuse survivor Vicci Jeffries, Edinburgh Academy abuse survivor Giles Moffat and trauma therapist Lesley Anne Pratchett.

Podcast 4 - Online Abuse

April 2025

Research published in 2024 by the Childlight Global Child Safety Institute at the University of Edinburgh found that “more than 300 million children a year are victims of online sexual exploitation and abuse”. And here in Scotland, in 2023 alone, Police Scotland data showed that there were over 670 incidences of “communicating indecently with a child” reported. In this edition, we wanted to find out if we still have the scope to build flood barriers against the tidal wave of online abuse. To find out, presenter Clare English was joined by Jess Macbeath, an online safety consultant, and Detective Sergeant Kirsty Paisley from Police Scotland's Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Team.

Podcast 5 - Non-Reporting

May 2025

Continuing Care in foster care

In this podcast we are exploring why people might NOT speak up to report concerns that a child might be being neglected or harmed. We also wanted to find out what happens if we do tell someone that we’re worried about a child or children. To find out why some people stay schtum, presenter Clare English was joined by Elaine Torrance - independent chair of Dundee's Children At Risk Committee, Detective Sergeant Lianne Kelly of Police Scotland's National Child Abuse Investigation Unit and Helen Westerman, Head of Local Campaigns at the NSPCC.
