Post incident support

In September 2024, members of the Scottish Physical Restraint Action Group (SPRAG), came together to explore the importance of what happens in the moments that follow an incident when a child or young person is physically restrained. These moments - both immediately after a restraint and later when there is space to pause and reflect - have a significant impact on everyone involved.

Since then, SPRAG members have continued to share learning about what is working well and what remains challenging in developing good post-incident practice across residential child care. This includes how we respond to all kinds of incidents involving restrictive practices, including seclusion.

Just over one year on, in November 2025, SPRAG hosted an online session to reflect on changes over that year, what progress has been made, and what still needs attention to strengthen post-incident practice across the sector.

To support the continued development of safe, accountable, and reflective practice in residential childcare settings following incidents involving children and young people, a group of SPRAG member organisations are currently piloting a post incident reflection and recording tool. This tool will be made available on these webpages once the pilot and testing phases are complete.
